October is Black History Month in the UK, an event that has been celebrated nationwide for more than 30 years.
It was originally founded to recognise the contributions that people of African and Caribbean backgrounds have made to the UK over many generations.
Now, Black History Month has expanded to include the history of not just African and Caribbean people but all black people.

Black History Month
October is Black History Month, a dedicated time to celebrate the significant contributions of Black individuals throughout history. Black women have been at the heart of social justice movements throughout history, courageously battling oppression and advocating for change. However, their accomplishments have frequently been neglected or forgotten. Black History Month 2023 offers a significant opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the outstanding achievements of black women by focusing on ‘honouring the matriarchs of movements and saluting our sisters’.
We aim to shine a spotlight on these stories this year.
Students may also see posters around school celebrating this years theme. Each on introduces a Black Woman who has achieved something remarkable. These women come from various fields: literatures, science, leadership, and sports, among others, and each has a story filled with inspiration.
Black History Month Poetry Competition 2023
The essence of the Poem for this competition, students are invited to craft poems that weave stories about black women. Whether you choose to write about globally recognised figures, beloved family members, community heroes, or draw from your personal experiences, every story is cherished and valued.
Entries to be brought to the humanities department by 25th October.
